International Dance Day History

International Dance Day is a celebration created in 1982 by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI). It is a day to celebrate for those that understand the value of the art of dance and to bring it to the attention of those who are not aware of it.

  • An important dance personality is selected every year by the International Theatre Institute to write a message. In 2018, five people were selected, each one representing a UNESCO region (Africa, Arab countries, Asia Pacific, Europe, and the Americas).   • International Dance Day is celebrated on this day because it was the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, the creator of modern ballet.

International Dance Day Top Events and Things to Do

  • Anyone who wants to celebrate the day and plans to hold an event, be it an individual or an institution, can notify the ITI Centre or a "cooperating member" in their region to get the event to appear on the virtual map of the official International Dance Day website.
  • If you are performing a dance on this day and would like to promote the message written by one of the chosen personalities, you can say it, or suggest that it be said, at the beginning or end of the show.
  • Start a photo challenge. Strike a pose and post it to your favorite social media platform.
  • Attend a dance show or mark the day for one.
  • Go out dancing.
