Canada Parks Day History

Canada Parks Day seeks to raise awareness about the national parks and historic sites in Canada. This day encourages families to enjoy the numerous parks and historic sites scattered across Canada and to learn more about their history. There are 48 national parks and 171 national historic sites under Canada's national park administration as of 2020.

Canada Parks day has been around since the founding of the Parks Canada Agency in 1911. This agency is tasked with protecting Canada’s National Parks and landmarks. This day is observed annually on the third Saturday of July.

  • According to westjetmagazine, Canada was the first country in the world to create a national parks service. It was created in 1911 under the name Dominion Parks Branch. It was later changed to Parks Canada.
  • Parks Canada handles and manages 48 national parks, 171 national historic sites, and several marine conservation areas. It also manages 9 historic canals.
  • According to westjetmagazine, the Kluane National Park and Reserve in the Yukon is home to 17 of Canada's 20 tallest mountains. It is also home to the tallest mountain in Canada, Mount Logan, which stands at 19,551 feet.
