 Saint Mary Mackillop Day HistorySaint Mary Mackillop Day is a day to honour the first Australian to be declared a saint by the Catholic Church, as Saint Mary of the Cross. Saint Mary Mackillop was born on January 15th 1842, in Fitzroy, Victoria. Saint Mary is recognized for founding the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, a group of religious sisters who established schools and welfare institutions for the rural poor. Saint Mary Mackillop Day occurs on August 8th each year to commemorate the death of Mary Mackillop.
