International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime 9 December is a United Nations sponsored observance. This day seeks to raise awareness of the Genocide Convention and the role that it has in preventing Genocide. It also seeks to acknowledge and honor the victims of Genocide. The Genocide Convention is also known as Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. In 1948 this convention established rules relating to Genocide prevention.
