World Turtle Day History

World Turtle Day is a celebration started by the American Tortoise Rescue in 2000 to raise awareness about turtles and tortoises. As many species become increasingly more vulnerable, with some being critically endangered, the goal is to get people to act towards saving these animals.

World Turtle Day Facts

  • The American Tortoise Rescue gives the following tips on helping turtles and tortoises: never buy from a pet shop, report sales of animals less then four inches; don't remove them from the wild; report illegal sales or cruelty to animal control; help tortoises cross the road by carrying them to the other side, but don't try to turn them around as they'll go back on the road; write to legislators to protect their habitat.
  • There are seven species of sea turtles. According to Seeturtles.org six of the seven are threatened or endangered. Threats to sea turtles include: entanglement in fishing gear, poaching and illegal trade of eggs, meat, and shells, coastal development, plastic and other marine debris, global warming, ocean pollution, turtleshell trade.
  • All tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises. Tortoises are exclusively land animals.
  • Adwaita, an Aldabra giant tortoise, holds the verified record for longest-lived known tortoise. He lived to be 189 years old.
