This day serves as a remembrance for the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa in 1960. On this day Police opened fire at protestors during a peaceful demonstration against apartheid pass laws. The result was 69 dead and hundreds injured. International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was established in 1966 by the U.N General Assembly.
