Picnic Day History

Picnic Day seeks to encourage everyone to gather family and friends to enjoy a nice picnic outdoor. The tradition of picnics began in the 1800s when miners and railroad workers decided to sit outside and share or trade meals. by the 1900s picnics became a practical way for family and friends to enjoy being outside while having a meal together. Picnic Day is celebrated on the first Monday of August. In 2023, Picnic Day will occur on August 7th.

  • The record for largest picnic took place on Sydney’s Harbour Bridge in 2010. The bridge was covered in 11,000 square metres of turf and more than 7,500 people enjoyed breakfast together.
