National Sorry Day History

National Sorry Day commemorates the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families. This event occurred between 1910 and 1970, and is known as The Stolen Generations. National Sorry Day was established in 1998 after a report was brought before the Australian Parliament, which highlighted the stealing of at least 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in the 20th century. National Sorry Day is celebrated annually on May 26th which commemorates its first occurrence.
