National Close The Gap Day History

National Close The Gap Day is dedicated to encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to learn and use the services across Australia that can improve their health and wellbeing. National Close The Gap Day has been celebrated annually since 2006, and has the pledge of achieving indigenous health equality by 2030. National Close The Gap Day will be celebrated on March 16th in 2023.

  • According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, as of 2022, there are 984,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, which represent 3.8% of Australia’s total population.
  • In 2022, NSW Central and North Coast have the largest Aboriginal population with over 85,169 Indigenous Australians.
  • Since the creation of National Close the Gap Day (NCTGD), more than 250,000 people have participated across Australia.
