World Heritage Day

World Heritage Day in 2024
Days to go:

World Heritage Day seeks to foster appreciation, protection, and promotion of our shared cultural and natural heritage. By recognizing the importance of these invaluable monuments and landmarks, the day aims to foster dialogue on the conservation and sustainable management of our collective history. World Heritage Day contributes to international cultural cooperation and encourages us to preserve our shared heritage for future generations.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) first proposed the idea of World Heritage Day in 1982, and it was subsequently approved by UNESCO General Assembly the following year. With 33 sites in the United Kingdom currently holding the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage status, these national treasures range from landmarks like the Tower of London to natural wonders such as the Jurassic Coast. World Heritage Day offers a unique opportunity for people across the UK to reflect on the significance of these sites and understand their contributions to our collective historical and cultural wealth.

World Heritage Day is observed through a variety of events and activities designed to engage and inform people about the importance of these exceptional sites. These include guided tours, educational programs, exhibitions, and even online virtual tours, ensuring the public has access to experience and appreciate their remarkable heritage. World Heritage Day is celebrated on the 18th of April every year.
