![]() International Day of Sport for Development and Peace HistoryThe International Day of Sport for Development and Peace celebrates sports and their widespread contribution to education, human development, a healthy lifestyle and world peace. The day also serves to raise awareness for the positive influences of sport on the advancement of human rights, and both social and economic development of nations worldwide by encouraging social inclusion, fair play and team spirit. In 2008, it was estimated that over 1.53 billion people were not active enough; inactivity is the leading cause of diabetes and heart diseases. The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was proclaimed in 2013 by the United Nations. It is celebrated annually on April 6th, a day that was originally used to celebrate physical activity in the world as it coincides with the first day of the first Olympic Games in 1896.
