National Pet Day History

National Pet Day seeks to show appreciation for all the pets in the world. This day encourages people to love their pets and if possible, adopt those pets in need of a home. It advocates against animal cruelty and violence. It also highlights the importance of providing a home or shelter for unwanted pets.

National Pet Day was created in 2006 by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert Colleen Paige. It is observed annually on April 11th.

According to a 2019 American Pet Products Association survey, 67% of U.S. households owned at least one pet.
About 6.5 million companion animals (dogs, cats, reptiles, etc.) enter US animal shelters every year.
According to the ASPCA, about 3.2 million shelter animals were adopted in the US in 2018.

Spend time with your pet. Play with them, get them a gift, show them you love them.
Donate to a pet organization or charity that helps improve the lives of cats, dogs, and other animals. Some examples include Alley Cat Allies, Citizens for Animal Protection, and RedRover.
