National Selfie Day celebrates the awareness of selfies. The term selfie was reportedly coined by a drunk Australian on Flickr in 2004, a year after people started taking pictures of themselves with their cell phone cameras and posting them on MySpace. National Selfie Day is observed annually on June 21st since 2014.

  • Amateur chemist and photography enthusiast Robert Cornelius is considered by many to have been one of the first people to take a photographic self-portrait. In 1839, Cornelius set his camera up at the back of a family store in Philadelphia. He managed to capture an image of himself by removing the lens cap and then running into frame. He then sat in frame for several minutes before covering up the lens again.
  • Released in 2003, the Sony Ericsson Z1010 mobile phone introduced the concept of a front-facing camera to Western markets. It could be used for selfies and video calls.
  • The Oxford English Dictionary declared selfie as the word of the year in November of 2013. This was sometime after it was first included in the online edition of the dictionary.
