World Teachers' Day History

World Teachers’ Day seeks to raise awareness about the teaching profession and the challenges they face. The day also commemorates the 1966 ILO (International Labor Organization) and UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) recommendation concerning the status of teachers. This recommendation sets a standard regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers. World Teachers’ Day is observed annually on October 5th.
