International Volunteer Day History

The United Nations designated International Volunteer Day (IVD) to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism and encourage individuals to contribute their time and skills to promote peace and sustainable development in their communities. Recognised worldwide, IVD acknowledges the positive impact accomplished by volunteers, helps raise their visibility, and complements the global campaigns, initiatives, and partnerships that rely on the support of these selfless individuals. The critical aspects of this observance include promoting volunteerism, acknowledging and rewarding volunteers' efforts, and showcasing their work's impact in various sectors.

Introduced by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985, International Volunteer Day has become a vital occasion to engage this global network of goodwill ambassadors spanning various age groups, cultures, and sectors. In the United Kingdom, this observance aims to inspire people from diverse backgrounds to serve their communities through many volunteering opportunities. Recognised organisations such as the British Red Cross, The Royal Voluntary Service, and local non-profits count on the tireless work of these volunteers for their impact in areas like disaster relief, elderly care, and poverty alleviation.

International Volunteer Day is observed in the United Kingdom on December 5th each year, with various events and activities designed to highlight the power of volunteerism. Non-profit organisations, schools, and local government agencies nationwide organise volunteer recognition events, participate in campaigns to raise awareness, and encourage more people to volunteer. These initiatives offer a platform for volunteers to share their experiences and serve as a stepping stone for individuals looking to contribute their time and skills for the betterment of society.
