Bengali New Year, also known as Pahela Baishakh, celebrates the first day of the Bengali calendar. It also celebrates the agricultural season. This day encourages spending time with family, visiting fairs, and cleaning one’s house in preparation for a new year.
Bengali New Year stems from the Bengali calendar which was used in the 16th century. It was used by the Mughal emperor Akbar to collect taxes. Today it is celebrated as a part of Bengali culture. It is celebrated annually on April 14th.
