Summer Bank Holiday History

The Summer Bank Holiday is a holiday that for many marks the end of Summer. During the three-day weekend, many people take short trips or holidays. Many visit family and friends in different parts of the country.

The Summer Bank Holiday was introduced in 1871 with the Bank Holidays Act. It was originally intended to give bank employees the chance to participate in and attend cricket matches. One hundred years later, the Banking and Financial Dealings Act of 1971 moved the bank holiday to the last Monday in August for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, it continued to be observed on the first Monday in August.
