The concept of World Cities Day emerged in 2013, at the United Nations conference in Medellín, Colombia. In India, rapid urbanization has led to complex challenges such as overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure, inadequate housing, and environmental degradation. Recognizing the importance of addressing urban issues, the Government of India launched several urban development initiatives such as the Smart Cities Mission, AMRUT, and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. These programs aim to improve urban living conditions, enhance infrastructure quality, and promote environmentally sustainable practices, in alignment with the objectives of World Cities Day.
