World Elephant Day History

World Elephant Day seeks to raise awareness about the issues affecting elephants. Elephants are targeted by poachers due to the high demand for their ivory tusks. In places like China and Hong Kong, ivory is considered a luxury item that is used to make ornaments and jewelry. It is also sometimes used to make folklore medicine. According to worldelephantday.org, about 400,000 African elephants remain as of 2019.

This observance was originated by Patricia Sims of the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand. This foundation has collaborated with 100 elephant organizations globally in order to fight the extinction of elephants.
