Nelson Anniversary Day commemorates the arrival of the first New Zealand Company boat to Nelson on 1 February, 1842. The ship, named Fifeshire, brought with it 170 passengers from Britain to Nelson.

  • Nelson was a province in New Zealand. Provinces no longer exist, but their founding is commemorated locally per the New Zealand Holidays Act of 1981. Now known as provincial districts, which serve only to indicate an area, provinces had governmental powers. Provinces were abolished in 1875 and ceased to exist in 1876.
  • Horse racing, sailing regatta, foot races, and ploughing and shooting matches were part of the celebrations during the early years.
