Bulgarian Independence Day History

Bulgaria's Independence Day celebrates the nation's independence from the Ottoman Empire. From 1396 to 1908, Bulgaria was part of the wide-spread Ottoman Empire. Over the course of the eighteenth century, uprisings, revolt and nationalism took a strong hold across Europe. As many other people began to fight for independence, Bulgaria began rising against the Ottoman Empire in the spring of 1876. Finally, the nation was liberated in 1878 and decades later, Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria officially declared independence on 22 Septemeber 1908.

Bulgaria's Independence Day is celebrated annually on 22 September 1908 in order to mark the official declaration of independence.
