Independence Day History

Cyprus Independence Day celebrates Cyprus’ independence from Britain. Between 1878 and 1960, Cyprus was a British colony but after 5 long years of war, it gained its independence. This holiday recognises the agreement granted Cyprus its independence. The agreement between Greece, Turkey, Britain and Cyprus, was signed in Zurich and came into effect on 1 October, 1960. The island is split between a northern Turkish area and a southern Greek area.

Cyprus Independence Day is celebrated on 1 October annually, a day that marks its official independence from Britain. It was celebrated for the first time in 1963.
