International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development
International Volunteer Day (IVD) is an annual observance recognized worldwide to promote and celebrate the role of volunteers in communities. With a primary focus on local community engagement, it aims to appreciate the significant contributions made by volunteers to the socio-economic development and the betterment of society. The day presents an opportunity for volunteer organizations, institutions, and individuals to unite and demonstrate their solidarity in addressing problems people around the globe face.
Established in 1985 by the United Nations General Assembly, IVD has since been promoting volunteerism, encouraging governments to support volunteer initiatives, and recognising the impact of volunteers in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Volunteering has become an integral part of the social fabric in New Zealand, with the nation boasting one of the highest volunteering rates globally. 43.2% of adult New Zealanders contribute approximately 159 million hours annually through non-profit organizations, from the grassroots level to development projects.
In New Zealand, International Volunteer Day is observed through various means, including sharing inspiring stories of selfless volunteers, holding events to acknowledge volunteer achievements, and encouraging citizens to offer their time and skills. Non-profit organizations, local communities, and government institutions collaborate to arrange events, fostering goodwill and solidarity among the people. This critical global observance occurs every year on December 5th, providing an opportunity for Kiwis to raise awareness about the crucial contributions of volunteers to the country's development and well-being.
