Memory of St. Cyril and St. Methodius History

St Cyril and Methodius Day, also reffered to as Day of Bulgarian Enlightenment, Culture and the Slavonic Alphabet celebrates both saints lives and contributions to Bulgaria. Brother Cyril and Methodius were born in Thessalonika, in the Byzantine Empire, in the 9th century. Both brothers were men of God and renounced their lives to live in a monastery on the Bosphorus Sea. Later, they were sent into regions of Russia to convert Jews, Khazars and Moravians to Christianity. They subsequently invented an alphabet called glagolitic, marking the creation of what it today known as the Cyrilic alphabet which is predominantly used in Slavic languages. The brothers translated lithurgical books into Slavonic and began to convert followers to Christianity.

Saint Cyril and Methodius Day is celebrated annually on 24 May and marks the beginning of the Slavonic alphabet, literature, education and enlightenment in Bulgaria. Their feast day was declared by Pope Leo XII in 1880.
