Day of Our Lady of Sorrows History

Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows Day celebrates the Virgin Mary in her incarnation as Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. In 1717, Pope Benedict XII declared Our Lady of Sorrows to be the patroness of Slovakia. In 1964, Pope Paul VI designated the Sastin Cathedral in Slovakia, a cathedral devoted to Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, as a Basilica Minor. This is the first Basilica in Slovakia.

Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows Day in Slovakia is celebrated annually on 15 September. The day became an official state holiday in 1993 and was first celebrated in 1994.
