International Men's Day History

International Men’s Day (IMD) seeks to raise awareness about the issues men and boys face. This day aims to acknowledge the achievements of men and celebrate their contributions to their communities. It encourages discussion about the mental health of men and boys and it also works to improve gender relations by aiming for gender equality.

International Men's Day was started in 1991 by professor Thomas Oaster. IMD had been called for since the 1960s, but the small events taking place around the world in countries like the U.S, Canada, and France failed to get much attention. Even Oaster failed in his attempts to promote the event and in 1995, he ceased any plans for future IMDs. It wasn’t until 1999 that history professor Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh would go on to officially establish the day in Trinidad and Tobago. It would gain popularity in several different countries and eventually spread globally with the creation of the website internationalmensday.com. IMD is observed annually on November 19th.
