Saint Antonio History

This day celebrates the life of Saint Anthony. He was born Fernando Martins and later changed his name to Anthony when he was admitted into the new Franciscan Order. St. Anthony is the patron of lost and stolen things and was known as a great preacher and teacher. He died at the early age of 36 and was declared a saint by Pope Gregory IX.

  • St. Anthony was appointed provincial superior of northern Italy in the Order of the Friars Minor (also called the Franciscan Order). A provincial superior presides over all the members of a religious institution in a particular region.
  • St. Anthony is the Patron Saint of lost belongings. He is credited with many miracles involving lost people, lost things, and even lost spiritual goods.
  • He is known as St. Anthony of Padua because of the famous sermons he gave in that Italian city shortly before his death in 1231. He was only 35-years-old when he died and was canonized less than one year afterward by Pope Gregory IX.
  • St. Anthony was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII in 1946.
